How To Figure out how much moulding it takes!
You can do all this stuff in one minute after the first time!
You now know the exact glass size or canvas size of the
picture frame you want. Now you need to find the total "united inches"
of your frame, to figure out how much moulding it takes to build your
frame. This is really easy and will be very useful to you later in ordering
glass and mats.
Lets say you want a frame that you can drop a canvas or glass into that
measures 14 1/4" by 17 1/2". To figure the united inches of
your frame, all you do is round your figures off to the next higher whole
inch and add the two sizes together. Add only two sides, one long
side and one short side. Do not add all four sides of your picture!
Repeat: Do not add together all four sides of
the frame. Only one long side and one short side.
So if you needed the above frame. What you will order is
a frame that measures 14 1/4" by 17 1/2", your glass size.
And you now know that this frame contains 33 united inches.
(15+18=33 united inches.) This couldn't be any easier!
You should now know how to find out how many United Inches
are in any frame you would want to order!
Examine the charts below. Soon you will know how much moulding
it takes to build any frame you want.
The charts below are standard picture framers charts. They
are very accurate. These charts show how much moulding it takes to build
a picture frame with no waste left over. For example, it is impossible
to build a 12"x12" picture frame using four feet of moulding.
No picture framer can because of the cuts made to produce the four corners.
The chart below tells you that to build a frame this size requires 5 feet
of moulding because 12"+12" = 24 united inches.
It is easy to see that a 8x10 frame contains 18 united inches
and takes 4 and 1/2 feet of moulding to build. A 23 1/2 by 35 1/2 frame
contains 60 united inches (24+36=60) and takes 11 1/2 feet of picture
frame moulding to build. Notice how the United Inches in the charts are
in increasing size order.
Note that chart two is just a continuation of the first
chart. This is all very simple. All you need to do is find the united
inches in your picture frame, then using the charts below, figure out
how much moulding it takes to build your picture frame. You might want
to print this page out. Remember you are only concerned with the yellow
column, to find out the footage you need that is listed beside it in the
pink column.
When finished scroll down to the bottom of the page and
see if you can answer the question.
