Stanley Awl

Use an Awl to put screw eyes into your picture frames!  The awl shown below is one of the finest made if you can find it.  We now longer sell this awl due to not being able to get them from our supplier.  Below you will find the small articule that we placed here when we were selling this awl. I have elected to leave this article here, even though we no longer sell awls, because it is a pretty good article telling people how to use an awl to put screw eyes into picture frames for those that have never done this before.

stanley awl picture framing tool

The Stanley awl has a flat edge on one side. This stops the tool from rolling off the workbench every time you sit it down. Most other awls do not have this feature.

This awl has a wooden handle and is really a beautiful hand tool. This is one of the nicest awls ever made. I love mine and use it every day.

Picture Framers Awl

This awl works great for starting holes in picture frames for screw eyes and I even use it for screwing the screw eyes into the picture frame.

Stanley Picture Framers Awl in Use

The next image shows how to use the picture framers awl to wind the screw eyes into the back of the picture frame. This is easily done with a little practice.  Screw eyes go into most picture frames quite easily. Solid Oak picture frames are another story. Those frames are so hard that unless you make the hole big enough and use just the right size of screw eye, you can end up breaking the screw eye as you attempt to screw it into the picture frame.

driving a screw eye into the back of a picture frameEven though our screw eyes are hardened, if you use too small a screw eye the poor little thing will break.  This don't help the looks of the back of  your picture.  If you have never used an oak picture frame before. Try driving a few screw eyes into it before you put the nice paper backing on to get experience.
